The Hartland peninsular lies between Bideford and Bude and is bounded by the A39 “Atlantic Highway” to the south. It includes some very dramatic coastline, especially around Hartland Point and Hartland Quay, which is battered by Atlantic gales and can produce some very dramatic seas to add to the dramatic cliffs.
Close to Hartland Quay is Hartland Abbey, a private house with a walled garden and grounds stretching down to the sea at Blackpool Mill Mouth and is open to the public.
The area has been much used as a filming location including the murder scene in the John Le Carre film The Night Manager. More recently Hartland (and Saunton Sands) were the location for The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society – none of it was filmed on Guernsey! There is a great exhibition at Hartland Abbey featuring these and many other productions.
Although a good 45min drive from Georgeham, this is a favourite area to come and walk, especially on challenging winter days with a good gale blowing!
